Discover the fjords, wildlife and history of Svalbard aboard T/S Saeftinghe.
From 13 to 20 July 2027, we explore Isfjorden and its surroundings in detail. This impressive region combines vast fjords, glaciers, Arctic wildlife and remote settlements, offering a varied introduction to the nature and history of Svalbard.
During the week, we may visit the Russian mining settlement of Barentsburg and the abandoned settlement of Pyramiden. Further north, we search for glaciers, walrus colonies and the many bird species that return to Svalbard during the short Arctic summer.
A professional expedition guide from Backyard Svalbard accompanies us throughout the journey. The guide shares their knowledge of the wildlife, birds, ecology and history of the archipelago and allows us to make safe landings and guided hikes whenever conditions permit.

Our programme during this trip
Embarkation
T/S Saeftinghe will be ready for you in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Embarkation is scheduled on Tuesday 13 July 2027 from 17:00 onwards.
After settling in aboard, we introduce you to the ship, the crew and the safety procedures for the journey ahead. Our expedition guide will also explain the specific rules for going ashore and travelling safely in polar bear territory.
Our Program
During this seven-day expedition, we explore Isfjorden and its surrounding fjords. Our exact route is not fixed in advance. Weather, sea ice, wildlife sightings and local conditions will determine where we sail, anchor and go ashore.
Possible destinations include Barentsburg, a Russian mining settlement on the shores of Grønfjorden, and Pyramiden, an abandoned Soviet mining town where the buildings and infrastructure remain as reminders of a very different chapter in Svalbard’s history.
We also sail towards the northern parts of the area, where impressive glaciers descend into the fjords. From the deck of Saeftinghe, we search for walruses, seals and other Arctic wildlife. The cliffs, shores and surrounding waters are also home to numerous seabirds during the summer breeding season.
Wildlife and ecology are central to this voyage. Our expedition guide helps us understand the animals, landscapes and fragile ecosystems we encounter. Their local knowledge adds a deeper dimension to every landing, wildlife sighting and day spent sailing through the fjords.
Whenever conditions permit, we go ashore for guided walks. These landings allow us to experience Svalbard beyond the coastline—from tundra and historical remains to viewpoints overlooking glaciers and fjords. All excursions remain dependent on weather, wildlife activity and the safety assessment of the guide and captain.
In July, daylight never disappears. The midnight sun gives us the freedom to adapt our schedule to the conditions and make the most of every opportunity. There is no rigid itinerary: the rhythm of the journey is determined by nature, the ship and what we discover along the way.

- Accommodation on board based on 2 persons per room. A room consists of 2 single beds (bunk beds) with shared washroom.

For whom is this trip suitable?
With our voyages, we aim to introduce beginners to sailing and the ocean on the one hand, and experienced sailors who want to do something different on the other. But of course, not every trip is the same... That's why we distinguish between heaviness and effort. That way you have an idea of what you can, should and should expect.
This trip has 1 iceberg and is sailed in day trips.
These voyages are open to everyone. We sail exclusively day passages, without overnight crossings. In the evenings we moor safely in a harbour or drop anchor in a quiet bay. The program remains flexible: in case of less favourable weather we look for an alternative together. Perfect for those who want to get acquainted with sailing, or simply enjoy a relaxed yet adventurous stay on board. One iceberg stands for low-threshold adventure, where discovery and enjoyment are at the heart of the experience.
